Its a gorgeous colour, but has just appeared!

To be fair, we did a lot of cutting back, so it might have been there a while. DH thinks its a plant, I think its a giant weed - over to you😁

I can't see it yet...

Knittedfairies · 29/05/2020 17:22

Ah... Now I see it.

mineofuselessinformation · 29/05/2020 17:23

Spirea?

Knittedfairies · 29/05/2020 17:25

New growth of Kerria japonica?

mineofuselessinformation · 29/05/2020 17:27

Plant app says philadelphus - spirea leaves aren't serrated.

Vicbarbarkley · 29/05/2020 17:30

Jesus.... i cant see my pics and I posted them three times!

Glad you can....... off to look up philadelphus , Spirea and Kerria japonica - thanks all 😗

How can you see the photographs, and I cant????

I have switched to desktop from mobile and still cant see them 😑

Knittedfairies · 29/05/2020 18:08

Nope; second thoughts it's not a kerria. (The photos have disappeared though...)

NanTheWiser · 29/05/2020 18:09

Looks like the gold leaved form of Philadelphus - should produce scented white flowers, but I don't see any buds on yours.

Vicbarbarkley · 29/05/2020 18:30

Can see the pics now!
No, no flowers, no buds. But perhaps growing in the shade of other shrubs inhibited flower growth?
So, not a weed then?

OP posts:
Vicbarbarkley · 29/05/2020 18:31

It is a lovely shade of green, so very nice even without the flowers

Does it smell when you crush the leaves. I thought it was lemon balm.

MereDintofPandiculation · 30/05/2020 08:59

A weed is a plant where you don't want it. So that's only for you to decide.

Vicbarbarkley · 30/05/2020 18:09

@MereDintofPandiculation seriously?
Does every bloody post on MN have to have a pedantic reply. Is it the law?
I give not a shiny shit whether it is a plant or a weed. As I said, it is a beautiful green in colour.
I simply did not know what it was. Now, thanks to the helpful people on this thread, I have a fair idea.

That particular poster comes out with the pedantry every single time anyone so much as dares to mention the word 'weed'. It's getting tiresome.

In my Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary, published 1978 the definition of the word weed is as follows:
Any useless plant of small growth; any plant growing where it is not wanted by man; any wild herb.

yamadori · 30/05/2020 18:42

Yes there is such a thing as a weed.

I just checked in my textbook called 'Principles of Horticulture' which is used as a study textbook by (among others) The Royal Horticultural Society.

Chapter 9 is entitled Weeds. The very first sentence says that a weed is a plant of any kind that is growing in the wrong place.

Antaresisastar · 31/05/2020 07:08

I think it’s a Philadelphus too. I’ve attached a photo of mine. If you’ve cut it back hard it probably won’t flower this year, but when it does the scent is gorgeous.

SaskiaRembrandt · 31/05/2020 07:20

Iwas going to say a kerria, but now I've seen the photo of a philadelphus. I agree with pp, the leaves are a lovely shade of green.

onalongsabbatical · 31/05/2020 08:24

Philadelphus I think.
Those of you disagreeing with MereDint seem to then in the next sentence be saying EXACTLY what MereDint says - a weed is just a plant in the wrong place.

MereDint - I agree with you. Grin

Vicbarbarkley · 31/05/2020 20:33

I have decided it is most definitely a philadelphus, thank you all so much.

I have a large area of rough land we have let go, to help along wildlife. Believe me, I embrace weeds. This was just a lovely surprise when we cleared some overgrown shrubs and it must have been there for years, unseen and unloved.
I could not care less what it was.....I just wondered what it was called. DH and I had a daft bet. He won.

I thought it looked liked my Himalayan honeysuckle but the leaves aren't serrated

But it us the same colour so if you're looking for something bright this is z as n alternative
