Japanese Maple - Sun or Shade?

We have just got an Acer in a pot - a Japanese Maple Bloodgood, roughly about 2 ft high. Do they prefer full sun, shade or a bit of both? At the moment it’s positioned so it gets sun most of the day, shaded from around 3,4pm. I’m not sure if we should move it to a more shaded area, so it’s not so scorched, bearing in mind we are getting a lot of sun at the moment! What would be a good permanent position for it?

I think they are happiest in part shade and they need shelter from wind Smile

The red and purple-leaved ones can go a bit wishy washy if they are in too much shade. Somewhere that isn't windy and gets sun part of the day would be best.

Mine are in about the same sun/ shade ratio as yours and are fine. I grow them in large pots, so if I’m worried I can move them about.

Dappled shade works for ours. They live in the partial shade of a big horse chestnut but get sun for a good part of the afternoon.

It needs somewhere less sunny than where you have it.

If you can, avoid sun first thing in the morning. The leaves can get scorched if they still have dew on them when the sun hits.

Mine all get sun from about 10am onwards, mostly all day. Two with dissected green leaves and a Trompenberg with gorgeous dark red leaves and they’re thriving.

Ours are in shade all morning then full sun and seem happy.
