Creating a herb garden

Novice gardener here. Have bought several varieties of herbs from a garden centre and also attempting to grow some herbs from seed. Have repòtted the garden centre herbs in slightly larger pots and when they've got a little sturdier was then planning to plant them in raised beds to create my lovely herb garden.

Feel I'm being rather naive. What do I need to know?

@Oblomov20 if you can’t find parsley in the garden centre then try to get a supermarket one and split.

@applesandpears33 did your Oregano almost die of cold or something else? I’m also in the central belt and have always just used marjoram in double quantities. I thought about getting an oregano plant but I’m not sure if it’s worth it if it struggles in such a mild winter.

I do have a pot of apple mint (I think) that spreads everywhere and won’t die. You can have some after lockdown if you want.

What do I do with fennel? I planted lots of old seed over lockdown and lots has germinated.

I bought some more herbs for window boxes!

In one I have bubblegum mint, silver thyme, lemon balm, lemon thyme and apple mint
the bubble gum mint is so so minty, I brushed it with my fingers in the car and it was like a tube of toothpaste exploded!

in the other there's chives, tarragon, marjoram, possibly dead lemon balm and possibly caraway

the maybe dead lemon balm, marjoram, chives and possible caraway were all bough last year and not potted on as i ran out of compost!

but we got some in HomeBargains and the other herbs came from the garden centre locally who will do it all over the phone and give you a collection appointment

Also bought coriander, parsley and basil in aldi....I'll keep the basil indoors but I might pot the others up outside, and I found some seeds so I planted them too!
Will see if they grow, the pack had italian lettuce, rocket, chives, herb mix, thyme and basil

Also dh has said there are some old pallets knocking about at work so he might be able to get some and we could make planters!

Thank you Pea, I will do that!

You can grow basil from cuttings. Get a supermarket plant, snip sprigs just under where two leaves join the stem. Pull bottom leaves off and stick in water.
They will grow roots

I assumed the oregano has died due to the cold as it has always happened over a winter, but now I'm thinking about it the plants could have died due to other reasons such as too much rain. Our garden is quite exposed so you may fare better with it.
