Special tree

A family member has just finished sorting out their large garden and I’d like to get them an ornamental tree, something special. I was thinking of an ornamental willow but I’m not quite sure that’s it - any lovely suggestions please?

Acers all the way for me. Here are three of mine (of five) from a window above.

I think think willow has roots that can cause damage. I too would go with Acers

Weeping pear? Much better behaved than a weeping willow.

A magnolia that isn't soulangeana or stellata

Weeping crab apple.

Something that has wildlife value will bring happiness in dark or dull days. Silver birch? Crab apple. Pretty-pink-blossomed apple? Or a nut tree such as walnut or hazel?

Are you sure they’ll appreciate it?
Just that I’m personally quite picky and although I’d definately appreciate the thought, I’d feel really quite annoyed if I was bought a large plant as a surprise that didn’t ‘fit’ with my vision for the garden or that I couldn’t make room for because I’d already finished my plans and planted everything

Just tell them you’d like to buy them a special plant and ask what they would like. It’s too easy to get the wrong thing otherwise.

Plants all have their own needs in terms of conditions.

I agree with frostedviolets. MIL bought me three sugar pink roses that clash with everything. It was kind of her to think of buying me plants, because I love plants, but it was quite annoying to have to put them into a border they don’t go in.
