I've got a corner of my garden that's looking quite bare now the wind has blown down the neighbours half dead tree that used to over hang my garden. I've mainly got astroturf in my garden do most things are in pots, however I also do have a soil strip I plant things in.

Can anyone recommend a rose that's a climber but also has a nice smell to it so I can sit in my garden, relax, ignore the kids and cats and enjoy?

Any David Austin would be lovely. What colour do you like.

frostedviolets · 23/05/2020 21:09

Not all David Austin’s are scented!
Make sure you double check before buying a David Austin that it’s listed as ‘strong fragrance’

Reader1984 · 23/05/2020 21:09

This is a David Austin. 3 years of growing and this year they smell like lemons! Sorry, I don't know what it's called, I just bought it because it was yellow Smile

Gertrude Jeckyll from David Austin. Beautiful pink with a lovely scent.

This one! It's beautiful and looks amazing with blue or purple flowers.

Malvern Hills is beautiful- we have it in our garden and it’s an absolute delight and smells heavenly every morning.

Shadowboy · 23/05/2020 21:14

It’s a David Austin rose by the way.

tilder · 23/05/2020 21:15

You will struggle with true purple in a rose. I would expect lots of breeding and possibly loss of scent. Lots of rose websites let you search with filters for fragrance, colour etc.

This rambler is the closest to purple that David Austin seem to do link

I would go for a less purple colour but more scent.

frostedviolets · 23/05/2020 21:19

Gosh, I can’t think of any purple climbing roses.
Much less any scented ones.

I’d go for a different colour

I've just been having a look at David Austin Roses and they have a great climbing rose that has dd's name. What makes me chuckle though is that it's a very bright, fiery one which is just like dd is!
Might just have to order it, just because.

There’s this one?
It’s listed as lilac but it looks pink to my eye

Now that IS nice, and a bonus that it will do well in poor soils as well.
If I buy all the plants I want I'll run out of space for my pots and growbags

i have a dog rose in the garden which smells AMAZING, it has that lovely rose, turkish delight, heady scent without being old lady handbags!

It is a deep strong fuchsia pink and has lovely big red rose hips on it once the flowers are done

the bees love it too, they come buzzing around and make excited zizzy buzzy noises every time they get into one of the flowers!

MunsteadWood · 23/05/2020 21:54

My favourite David Austin climbing rose is the Generous Gardener. So so beautiful and delicate pale pink, huge flowers, bees always congregated around mine and gorgeous old rose scent. I had a Veilchenblau rambler for a while too (linked upthread) but found it kept getting covered in powdery mildew so I ended up digging it up. That said I saw a lovely one in a nearby garden recently so it may just have been me!

TiddleTaddleTat · 23/05/2020 23:15

Just watched gardeners world from last night on iPlayer and there were a few segments on roses, and some recommended. I liked the sound of queen of Sweden, I think it was called?

tempestterra · 23/05/2020 23:56

Zefrin-drewer (pretty sure my spelling is wrongBlush) thornless rose, deep red, smells amazing, and can grow very tall!

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/05/2020 12:40

Zéphirine Drouhin. Though I'd have descibed the flowers as deep pink rather than deep red.

I like Emily Gray - apricot flowers, and a lovely fresh apple scent. Only flowers once, though, not a repeat flowerer.

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/05/2020 12:42

Sorry, forgot your preference for purple. Can't get much further from purple than apricot!
