Can anyone identify these please?

I planted up this bed last autumn but have absolutely no idea what these monsters are?!!

They're almost at the top of a six foot fence - or at least the tallest one is - putting on an inch or two each day, in bud but showing no sign of opening yet. Depending on the time of day they're either bang upright or bending slightly.

I did think some kind of allium, and did plant various bulbs, but the stalk and leaves don't look like any other allium I've got!

Thanks in advance to anyone who can put me out of my misery.

Can anyone identify these please?

I can't but there is an app which can. It's called Picture This & it's free (I have an iPhone, not sure if it's on android)

GreyGardens88 · 21/05/2020 20:48

Definitely looks like alium to me

They look like alliums to me; does the foliage smell onion-y when crushed?

GreyGardens88 · 21/05/2020 20:49

from google

Stupid me.

I'd forgotten the first rule of allium testing! ..... and yes, they do smell onion-y.

Thing is, I'd already looked at allium giganteum photos and the leaves just don't seem the same as those.

Thanks. It is on Android too but I never give bank details for free trials in case I forget to cancel. Otherwise that'd be a great idea.

You can use Google lense to identify plants. No need to pay for an app.

Allium summer drummer I think.

begoniapot · 21/05/2020 21:17

Looks like a triffid. 🤣

stella1know · 21/05/2020 21:20

Agree with ThomasHardy, they look like drumstick alliums.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 21/05/2020 21:26

Summer drummer (not the same as sphaerocephalon) can grow up to 2 and a half metres. Please post a photo when they flower op!

Allium summer drummer I think.

Ooh thank you so much. I've googled Summer Drummer and I think you've nailed it. The leaves, stalk, bud shape and size all match!

Weirdly I have absolutely no recollection of buying them and wouldn't deliberately have chosen something so tall. But now I'm excited to see how they tall they get and what the globes look like.

I'll definitely put a photo up.

Thanks all, this has been mystifying me for weeks.

I'm really tempted to add them to my autumn bulb list. Hope you enjoy them!

I have exactly the same, and they look exactly like yours (picture taken 5 minutes ago)
It was very late when I read this thread last night 😂

They are definitely alliums, I remember planting them last autumn.
I'm relieved now that they are probably ok and will still bloom, if yours are looking like that too. I think mine aren't getting quite enough sun - lie yours, I see them bending/reaching in the direction of the sun

For the actual name, I think I probably posted a picture in the 'Can we have a thread of pictures', last autumn. But yes, summer drummer sounds very familiar Smile
