I recently moved into a new house, and I'm really lucky to have inherited a lovely garden out the front with various shrubbery.
However, I'm quite new to all this, and I'm trying to identify what this herb bush might be. It's got quite a strong smell when I rub it between my fingers, but I can't quite place it.
Can anybody help me?

Looks like honeysuckle rather than a herb

fiddlededum · 17/05/2020 20:57

Salvia?

HappyHammy · 17/05/2020 20:58

What sort of smell does it give off

Squashbuckle · 17/05/2020 20:59

I was also going to suggest salvia.

Your new garden looks lovely btw OP!

Oh, thank you! I didn't expect such quick responses.
I think the smell is lemony, but I can't be sure. I've been googling lemon herbs - it's definitely not sage, as the leaves have a shine rather than that downy surface.

Looks like lemon verbena to me

fiddlededum · 17/05/2020 21:35

Salvias can smell, it looks like it has buds that are soon to flower to me - so wait a week or so and see. Salvia flowers look like this (come in all sorts of colours)

Lemon verbena

HappyHammy · 17/05/2020 21:56

Lemon balm

ConferencePear · 17/05/2020 22:00

It looks like an ordinary sage bush to me. Salvia is the latin name. There are ornamental versions.

Howzaboutye · 17/05/2020 22:02

Hmm not lemon balm

JockTamsonsBairns · 17/05/2020 22:13

Thanks all for your further suggestions. I've just had a quick Google, and I think it might be lemon verbena. I'll wait a few weeks and see if anything comes of the buds.

It's quite exciting having a new garden, isn't it? Smile

It could be oregano.

Lemon balm looks more like mint. Lemon verbena has longer, narrow pointed leaves on a twiggy branch. Salvia usually longer ovally leaves with a thick, leathery texture.

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/05/2020 14:53

I thought marjoram but it looks a bit woody for that.Leaves look a bit broad for Lemon verbena. On the whole we seem to be settling on something in the Dead nettle family - so a good close up of the flowers when they open should nail it.

Does it have a square stem?

GlubGlubGlub · 18/05/2020 15:16

It is a Salvia of some sort (definitely not lemon balm)
