How to mark out and dig an oval lawn?

Any ideas?

We are DIY our new build garden while my partner is off work. The lawn is currently a rectangle shape, we want it oval. How can we mark and measure it out to make sure it’s even at each side?

Doesn’t help that the garden isn’t a perfect rectangle, there’s a 90 degree angle at one fence corner and 45 degree angle at the other.

Seen loads of tutorials for circle lawns but none for oval.

Google “eclipse construction string method” you will need two stakes and a rope or strong string.

Ellipse not eclipse, but yeah, what she said. Big loop of rope around two stakes stuck close to each other in the middle. Get the DC to join in and it qualifies as maths home Ed.

This is how you choose where to put the sticks and how long to tie the string.

Also, you can buy spray to mark out grass. A bit like the stuff schools use to mark running lanes, but in spray form. I used it on my lawn - dead easy. I wanted curves but not entirely symmetrical, so just went free form!

Didn’t notice the autocorrect classic change to eclipse! Sorry.
