Will blood and bone help or hinder pots

I'm a newish gardener. I've gleaned that some plants like some types of fertiliser, but I'm not clear how to work out which is which. For example I noticed on gardeners question time this week Monty said a few times that xyz plant didn't like manure.

I have some big planters and some annuals that I've been tending and that I now want to plant- compost in pots is quite old but I haven't been able to get any more. I'm thinking of adding some fish blood and bone but I don't want to make things worse inadvertently. I may also be able to use some of my neighbour's tomato food if that would be better?

I would use tomato fertiliser which is good for anything where you want to encourage flowers or fruits. But I don't know if this is the right answer!

Thank you! I'll do that. So much to learn!
