Bird with a broken wing?

Not entirely sure this is the right place to post but hoping someone can help?
We have a bird in our garden that can't fly away, looks like it has a broken wing. Ive gave it some water and bird food on the floor but what next?

Hello,
Ring rspca and they will probably tell you to put it in box and take it to a certain vet. I found one like this and this was their advice.

Hatscats · 15/05/2020 15:31

Vets will treat / put down free of charge.

What type of bird?

Acidrain · 15/05/2020 15:32

Thank you for the quick reply, i have tried ringing them but it just rings. I live about a five minute walk to a woodland would it survive if i took it there?

Try to get it in a box now in case a cat gets it. They like the lid closed less stress. I hope you get it sorted out.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 15/05/2020 15:34

Same happened to me put it in a shoe box and took it to a vet, they will probably put it too sleep like they did with the blackbird I tried to save, they said the bird would have been killed by a cat if I had not brought it in so at least I saved it from a horrible death.

mrsjackrussell · 15/05/2020 15:35

It probably wouldn't survive if you left it. It would get eaten.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 15/05/2020 15:36

No it won’t survive, do you have an charity animal ambulance service near you? They will come and get it from you.

Acidrain · 15/05/2020 15:36

RSPCA are only dealing with emergency calls right now.

NoHardSell · 15/05/2020 15:36

Is it just a baby that hasn't learned to fly yet? Or is it trailing a wing?

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 15/05/2020 15:36

What part of the country are you in OP?

Teatowel1 · 15/05/2020 15:37

Is there a wildlife rescue anywhere near you? The local vet would probably know. Please don't just abandon it in the woods x

Herpesfreesince03 · 15/05/2020 15:37

Try and find a bird sanctuary if you can, they’re the only ones that’ll actually help it. The rspca/pdsa/general vets will just euthanise it

MayorPrentiss · 15/05/2020 15:37

Are you sure its wing is broken and it's not just a fledgling? At this time of year young birds leave the nest and practice flying to get the hang of things. Their parents still feed them on the ground for a while. Be worth checking before you touch it!

Acidrain · 15/05/2020 15:42

I live in Cumbria, I'm not sure if its a baby, its bigger than my hand. It trys to fly but its wing doesn't move but it isnt trailing. I won't abandon it, I'll ring the local vets as well

Acidrain · 15/05/2020 15:44

Can anyone tell me what type of bird it is?

HalfOfWhoIUsedToBe · 15/05/2020 15:45

Yes, call your local vet. If they can’t help they should be able to give you a number to a vet who can.

NoHardSell · 15/05/2020 15:46

Maybe a baby blackbird? Baby birds just kind of hop around a bit for the first day til they work out how their wings work.

ohlookthisisjustdaftnow · 15/05/2020 15:47

Pic is a bit small but it looks like a juvenile starling. If not that, then a juvenile blackbird.

NoHardSell · 15/05/2020 15:48

If you're not sure if it's not a baby bird then don't move it. The parents will be nearby and bring it food. Maybe watch from inside the house to see?

Acidrain · 15/05/2020 15:50

It moves hopping around maybe it is a baby, its been all over the garden not just in one place. It looks like its trying to fly away but can't. Thanks for the number above i will try that one thank you

OP posts:
Hatscats · 15/05/2020 16:54

It looks like a fledgling to me, I’d leave it and see if parents appear.

Nighting · 15/05/2020 17:13

It looks like a fledgling blackbird. Please leave it alone. If you try to move it it'll most likely die of shock and even if it doesn't, there aren't any blackbird sanctuaries. bites tongue really hard

Acidrain · 15/05/2020 17:42

I rang animal concern and they thought the same that it was maybe a baby from my description and because it didnt look in any distress and its wing wasnt visibly broken to leave it in the garden for 24 hrs and see if any parents come.

Sorry everyone, completely inexperienced in birds and gardens, genuinely thought it couldn't fly as it was hurt. Thanks for all your help though
