I didn’t plant this (at least, I don’t think I did!), anyone know what it is? It looks like it’s about to have pink/purple flowers.

Plant ID please!

Those look like delphinium leaves to me.

Ginfordinner · 09/05/2020 11:41

But delphinium are usually blue or white

thisenglishlife · 09/05/2020 11:42

Looks like Japanese Hop (which is invasive), update when it flowers please.

JoesExotic · 09/05/2020 11:43

My plants app has given me these, based on your photo.

Looks like hardy geranium to me. Small pink flowers, perennial and no special care needed. Cut it back after flowering and it will grow and flower again. Spreads readily.

PenfoldsFive · 09/05/2020 11:49

Ooer. I don’t like the idea of invasive.

I moved it last week, it had popped up behind something else so I moved to where it could be seen. I thought it was going to be a poppy or something nice. Blush

The good news is that if it is something undesirable it will be easy to pull out.

Ah now, just seen the post about hardy geranium. I do have geranium Rozanne, but the leaves are different. Do they self seed or mutate?

OP posts:
campion · 09/05/2020 14:26

They mutate in my garden!. Not sure how,but they do seem to thrive on neglect as long as it's a sunny spot.

walkingchuckydoll · 09/05/2020 14:28

@joesexotic

Which plant app is that please? We'd like a good app to find out what some plants are.

yamadori · 09/05/2020 14:51

If that's an example of what that particular app comes up with, I wouldn't bother.

FoolsAssassin · 09/05/2020 14:53

Might be Astrantia

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/05/2020 10:27

Yes, I was going to say Astrantia - well worth keeping. Pretty sure it's not a hardy geranium. Since you're so near to flowering, wait to see what the flower is.

Agree with yamadori re app - the id is wrong in so many ways I don't know where to start. Although it is closer on the other id, if it's thinking about the plant in the background -it's at least got the right family.

PenfoldsFive · 10/05/2020 10:32

I shall return when there are some flowers!

I think the one in the background is a type of buddleia, I grew it from a cutting I took from a plant down the road.

FlashesOfRage · 10/05/2020 10:35

I’m 100% going with delphinium 👌

There are loads of varieties now with pink, lilac, purpley flowers (they’re the ones I like!)

FlashesOfRage · 10/05/2020 10:37

Yes the one behind is Buddleja globosa - orange ball tree x

PenfoldsFive · 10/05/2020 14:22

I’m now thinking rogue geranium.

Similar?

PenfoldsFive · 10/05/2020 20:54

Yep, reckon so. Wonder where it has come from!

OP posts:
MereDintofPandiculation · 11/05/2020 10:19

The reason I didn't think it was a Buddleia is that Buddleia globosa has its flower heads on stems, not tight against the leaves on the main stem. But if you grew it from a cutting it's more likely to be Buddleia that Phlomis. However, if later in the season it grows another stem our of the middle of the ball of flower with more leaves and another ball of flowers, then it's not the Buddleia.

I hadn't looked at the pinky-blue flower - yes, that's geranium. I was misled by the clusters of buds at the top which look like they have bracts around them
