Cornus hedge?

I want to create some kind of hedge/barrier between my house and the neighbour. We currently have some very elderly rose bushes that are going to be moved.

I want something interesting in the winter with good foliage in the summer. Would a nice red/orange cornus work do you think?

Are they easy to grow and maintain as a sort hedge? I want something I can train upwards rather than outwards?

It depends what you're after, something to act as a screen, or something just to mark the boundary. Cornus look fantastic in winter, but it's the young branches that have the colour, so to maintain it you cut back to a few inches high each spring to let more new branches grow. So no good as a hedge, but as a simple replacement for the rose bushes, it would look good, especially underplanted with winter and early spring flowering plants/
