Are these medium geranium plants or have I been ripped off?

Just had a delivery that I’ve been waiting for of 70 geranium plants from a large gardening website. Not cheap but ordered them in medium size as I wanted to plant them out and not have to grow them on. I don’t have a greenhouse nor any ‘pots’ as we have not long moved and then lockdown happened. Only have some outside larger planters. These arrived. Don’t see how these can be medium. What on earth shall I do with them as they are tiny and so delicate to plant! Do they look medium to you?

Only if small is a seed! It’s a bit early for geraniums isn’t it - the ships usually have them from Mid May.

Russell19 · 07/05/2020 18:16

Surely the 'medium' bit means they will be medium sized when flowering?

Lordfrontpaw · 07/05/2020 18:17

But hey, I ordered two forsythias (from the pic) and got a huge box with 2 bloody twigs (about 4 inches high)!

They look a bit bigger than plug plants but still small. You can’t put them outdoors yet anyway it’s going to be too cold at the weekend as they are not hardy. Can’t you put them in the planters and put them inside somewhere?

Sometimenever100 · 07/05/2020 18:19

I have other plants arriving with the same company mid - end of May so I thought they would all come the same time. Don’t know why they have arrived so early.
No medium refers to the size of the plant they give you. See this flyer that came with it (bit muddy)
Small needs to be grown on.
Med can be planted outside and are classed as medium / ready

Normally they would say what size to expect. The online retailer I use sells a 'jumbo plug' which is ready to plant straight out but still very small looking ifswim.

I think those look ok for medium plug plants.

paininthepoinsettia · 07/05/2020 18:21

I noticed that the geraniums on sale in B&Q and The Range were of similar size and very overpriced, I think it has been a bad year but those are definitely not the usual medium size. Sorry OP, but I'm really glad I didn't order online now!

Sometimenever100 · 07/05/2020 18:22

Doodie- I have a garage room which is warmer than outside And warmer than the actual garage if that’s any good? I don’t have much to plant them in- I have one planter and a vintage wooden box which I was going to put some in but that will leak water over the floor of the games room!?

They look like bloody cress! I’ve got various seeds that I planted about 4 weeks ago that aren’t much smaller.

Sometimenever100 · 07/05/2020 18:25

Anyone know if I plant them all in a bigger planter, then bring them in of a night and put them in the sun during the day would that be ok? How long do these take to grow so I would be able to put some in the ground?

Lordfrontpaw · 07/05/2020 18:27

I’d be tempted to keep them indoors or cover them on plastic bags. The weather is supposed to turn and get nippy over the weekend (I assume you are in the U.K.)

Sometimenever100 · 07/05/2020 18:29

Yes I am in the south so tomorrow and sat looks hot for us then colder on Sunday onwards. If I just keep them inside in That tiny tray though they won’t grow much?

How much did you pay? They are only seedlings and need potting on).

Lordfrontpaw · 07/05/2020 18:33

I’d let them get a little bigger before potting - they look so tiny and pathetic just now!

Disclaimer - my gardening knowledge comes from being a right pain in the backside as a child and aways following the gardener around constantly asking questions.

DarkMintChocolate · 07/05/2020 18:34

We live in the South. I put some geraniums in pots last year. I left them outside all winter. They “died”. The brown stalks are now sprouting green leaves and coming into flower again.

yamadori · 07/05/2020 18:34

They won't be hardened off yet, and will need protection overnight. It is probably too soon for them to be in full sun for any length of time either, they'd shrivel in no time.

Lordfrontpaw · 07/05/2020 18:37

Geraniums and the cockroaches of the plant world. You can ignore one for years and the bugger will start flowering again (I have a pot I can’t reach and it’s flowering now!).

But yes, those babies need protecting for a little while yet.

Knittedfairies · 07/05/2020 18:38

I bought some 'jumbo' geranium plants online, and they were not much bigger than yours when they arrived. I potted them up, and they're growing on nicely. I had the same last year - they did eventually fill the troughs I put them in. How much did you pay per plant? I think mine worked out about 60p each.

Pipandmum · 07/05/2020 18:41

My geraniums survive outside year round and are blooming away now. Isle of wight micro climate...
But they do look small but maybe they are medium size plug plants?

BalloonSlayer · 07/05/2020 18:42

I just had 12 "mega size" osteospermums arrive in a box half the size of a shoebox . Grin I ordered the biggest ones they did as
I remembered being aghast at the smallness of the plants last time I ordered some.

I was still a bit aghast TBH.

Sometimenever100 · 07/05/2020 19:07

Ok so sounds normal then I am used to going to bandq every year around now and spending around £30 on a lovely assortment of plants ready to put in containers or in the ground. This is a bit of a shock. I only have one large planter. Will that do if I put in partial shade and bring in at night?

OP posts:
Sometimenever100 · 07/05/2020 19:08

For those who asked- I could have bought 40 for £14 or 70 for £17 plus delivery

Purplewithred · 07/05/2020 19:11

They need to be potted on or they wont grow. Yes put them out during the day, they will like full sun eventually but I'd start them in partial shade. They will need to come in at night until we're over this cold patch as long as 'in' is warmer than outside.

HavenDilemma · 07/05/2020 19:14

You do realise they start out as seeds smaller than a grain of rice, don't you??

HavenDilemma · 07/05/2020 19:16

These are my current Geraniums. Flowered nicely and are in a planter outside, thriving. Grown from seed
