That looks like a Rowan tree to me. It had lovely orange berries in the autumn

OwlBasket · 02/05/2020 16:55

I’m pretty sure that’s an ash tree

Imisscheese · 02/05/2020 17:23

It's only about 4m away from the house so that's probably too close for a tree. Do you think I can move it?

If it is an Ash seedling, best to get rid of it, they grow quite rapidly into large trees.

Imisscheese · 02/05/2020 17:35

Thanks very much. I'll get rid of it then.

There is an app called Seek which is good for plant/nature identification, we've used it a fair bit to identify some of the plants we inherited when we bought our house.

4m is quite a way from the house. wait & see if it has rowan berries in the autumn, because rowan trees are very pretty & don't grow too big.

Dodie66 · 02/05/2020 18:38

I don’t think it’s and ash tree. The leaves are rounded so it’s a Rowan and like the previous poster said it won’t grow into a big tree. I would wait till autumn and see if it has orange berries

MakingASilkPurse · 02/05/2020 18:40

Agree it looks like a Rowan

Imisscheese · 02/05/2020 19:05

Thanks. I'll wait till autumn and see what happens.

It looks like ash to me as the edges are smooth. They grow like weeds in my garden, I'd pull it up asap!
Rowan leaves are a similar shape but the edges are serrated.

AlrightBabby · 02/05/2020 19:12

I'd agree Ash tree, it'll be huge in no time 😢

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/05/2020 12:34

The leaves of rowan aren't that shiny. And as someone said, rowan leaves have serrated edges.

Have a look at the buds - if the leaf buds, before they start swelling, are black, then it's ash.

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/05/2020 12:36

Young rowan trees have a brownish look to their twigs and trunk, ash trees have a more greyish look.

NanTheWiser · 03/05/2020 12:45

Definitely Ash.
