I walk past this bush every day on my dog walk and it smells beautiful. I've tried to identify it online but I'm still unsure as to what it is. It also has sharp spikes on it.

I think it might be a common barberry (Berberis). Has it got yellow hanging flowers?

Thank you, Chateau. Yes, I think there may be some little hanging flowers on it. I'll have a look tomorrow!

Yes, looks like a Berberis. And you can see the yellow flowers in the first picture. And in the second.

I think I had this once and it looks like Escallonia?

It's a berberis, and while they're lovely, they're vicious to trim and lots of people get raised bumps in reaction to being pricked. If you're thinking of getting one, put it somewhere you won't have to brush past, and use really thick gloves to pick up clippings.
