What is this please and what is the infestation?

This was growing in Cornwall on cliff faces in long strips. I took a little snippet, potted it at home and its now tripled in size.

Problem is, it has tiny, sticky specks of a clear liquid on it. Also, occasionally I notice small (2mm) semi-circular, green, half shells attached to the stalks, and 4mm, white cocoons which look like a tiny bird poo! I remove these added things as soon as I see them, but I'm tempted to bin the whole plant if I have a colony of something growing on it!?!

Some sort of samphire or glasswort plant maybe?

Beebumble2 · 19/04/2020 18:54

It’s a type of succulent and it looks like it’s got mildew. Have you been watering too much?
There are spray controls on the market, or you could remove the affected bits and water less.

The small cocoons could be scale mite. I’d dump the whole plant, before it infects the others in the planter. Sorry.

Ahh, the white thing is called a 'cottony cushion scale'.

It's Carpobrotus edulis, not native to the UK, and very prolific in the West Country, and Channel Islands. It is not an indoor plant, needing full sun, and sharp drainage to do well. It's actually quite a pest on some cliffs.

@NanTheWiser- it does look similar, but mine has much slimmer, finer 'leaves' to that species you mentioned. Maybe its related?

Yes, I realise its not an indoor plant, but its tripled in size and seems happy. Grin
