Euphorbia?

These seedlings are growing in my gravel drive. They look like Euphorbia to me, but I don’t have any in the garden (I’d like some though). I’ve potted a few up and will see what happens. Do they look like Euphorbia to you? If so, where are the leaves? Do you think I can grow these on to proper plants? Many thanks

Euphorbia?

It looks like a weed, I always struggle to tell the difference. If it’s a weed it’s called chickweed or a regional variation. Do you have euphoria in your garden currently.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 18/04/2020 19:46

Oh I see you don’t have any. I expect it’s a weed. Unless your neighbour has it and it’s come form there.

Oooo - it does look a bit like euphorbia, but I’d guess at it being a weed too. Great idea to plant euphorbia though. Oblongata is my favourite - it’s acid green and is gorgeous!

I don’t know the name but definitely a weed - we have it on the allotment. Very pretty though and it’s easy to see the similarity.

I love that weed - I let it grow all along the edge of the lavender border and it's a beautiful contrast.

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 18/04/2020 20:11

I don't think that's Euphorbia

Antaresisastar · 18/04/2020 20:18

Thanks everyone, looks like Milkweed. I’ll get rid of it and reuse my precious newspaper pots when my veg seeds eventually arrive!

Is it not the same as euphorbia?
If you like it you can keep it even if it's a 'weed'! Just be thoughtful about where you plant it.
Weed is just a plant in the wrong place. One gardeners weed is another's.... or however the saying goes ...

NanTheWiser · 18/04/2020 22:57

I agree with BobTheDuvet, it's Euphorbia peplus , aka Petty Spurge. Definitely a weed, usually Euphorbia seed pods are tripartite, and explosive, and in this species, the seed can stay viable for 50 years!

yamadori · 19/04/2020 11:18

What they ^ said. Chuck it away. Far away.

It is euphorbia, but it is the weed variety and spreads everywhere. It bleeds sticky white toxic sap as well, so don't get it on your fingers.

MereDintofPandiculation · 19/04/2020 11:49

Yes, Bob and Nan are right, Euphorbia peplus. An annual, specialising in quick growth in bare ground, so no need for massive leaf growth.
