Dh has confused old soil with compost - advice please

Dh has planted some new bare root plants we recently received in old soil, which was in a compost bag. It’s been sitting in the in the garage for 2 or 3 years.

The issue is, this may be the soil the gardener removed from a bed because we had a prolific and nasty weed in it. It’s just a bunch of small roots and clumped earth. Obviously no active weeds.

Will this be ok or could the weeds regrow after all this time? He’s spent all afternoon doing this and it would be really complicated to to dig up the soil and start again. Thanks

Agh, what a pain.
Would the gardener have left weedy soil in your shed? Didn't they remove the material as part of the job?
I suppose if it's so disruptive to remove I would probably leave it but keep a very close eye. At the first sign of any weeds coming up I'd dig up the plants and replace the soil with compost.

Thanks for your reply. Yes. There was another bag of crap dh also thought was compost. I spotted that one straight away but didn’t realise about the second one....

It’s a really nasty weed as well. Idk what it’s called as we’ve pretty much exterminated it. Think very deep root system. ☹️ I only realised what he’d been using when I needed a little to plant some veggie seeds. We aren’t great gardeners lol but thought we’d have a go this year.

I agree with you. We will just have to keep and eye on it. Worst comes to the worst we will have to get someone in when things have settled down..
