Campanula and clematis questions

I have a few campanulas that are still just green. I’m growing them as ground cover but they haven’t done much at all this season so only about small side plate size.
Is this normal and will they start to spread and flower soon?

My clematis is only starting to show new signs of life - I was hoping it would grown and spread to give some cover to a fence.
Will this grow quickly enough to do so or do I need to find something else as a fence covering?

Thank you

Campanulas usually come into flower around June, so hopefully you will have flowers then.
With the clematis it all depends on the variety. Some are much more rampant and fast-growing than others. You will have to wait and see with that one. Do you know which variety it is?

The campanula sounds normal, mine are still just green, it's a bit early yet. It depends which type of clematis, some grow like weeds, some take a lot longer to cover, it will also depend how much sun it's getting.

There are lots of different types of campanulas too, but if you're growing it for ground cover then if it's the sort that's on my rockery it should be flowering and spreading before much longer.

The only clematis I know which really covers a fence is Montana which would be grown and in bud by now. (And then after flowering I'll have to prune it hard back).

The summer flowering ones grow up pretty quickly but I wouldn't say necessarily cover a fence, more like decorate a trellis.

I’ve probably got a summer flowering clematis then. Il have to try and find a Montana one next time the garden centres are open

Il check in case there’s still a label

There's plenty of other clematis that will cover a fence. Don't be impatient, wait and see what you have!

If you go for a montana, you'll have to be prepared to keep it in check. It's equally happy to cover a house.
