Any ideas what this is? It's about four feet tall. I think it's possibly a variegated privet, but it's in an odd place for something usually used as hedging.

Could be a weigela. If so it should have pink flowers later in the year

Both more interesting suggestions than mine! I don't think it flowers, but maybe it didn't flower because it was over shadowed or I cut it back last year when it was in bud maybe?

I've got one of these, OP, I think it's golden privet. You're right, it's usually grown as a hedge - the previous owners of our house seem to have planted just one, and it looks like yours. It does flower occasionally, small, rather undistinguished white flowers.

Agreed, I think privet. Leaves aren't quite right for either Weigela or Eleagnus
