I have a huge comfier which has Virginia creeper climbing up it. It looks wonderful in the autumn but I worry it's strangling the tree.. is it like ivy in that respect ?

Ivy doesn't strangle a tree. What happens is a tree which is already struggling doesn't grow fast enough to outgrow the ivy load. And a tree which has a great mass of ivy in it is less able to withstand a gale.

No, it’s nothing like ivy.
