It looks like celandine to me, which some consider to be a weed.

Yea celandine, it’s everywhere at the moment. Personally I love it.

Very difficult to eradicate as it grows from tiny bulbils in the leaf axils. On the other hand, it dies down quite quickly, so it doesn't really matter. And it is lovely to see this early in the year.

There are bronze leaved varieties sold as garden plants

yes it's pretty isn't it?
I like looking to see the flowers open and close.

When I was small I used to pretend they were waterlilies (in the world of my imagination, where garden paths were rivers)

henceforth I shall pretend that too. :)
