do I want a greenhouse?

I have a pretty small garden with a patch of lawn and a patch for veg and a few flower beds (mostly low maintenance shrubs). None of it is very neat and I only have a couple of hours a week to spend on the garden.

and there is one spot where I could put a very small greenhouse (e.g. 4ft x 4ft). In my imagination, this would be a lovely haven full of tomatoes and little seedlings. But will it turn out in reality to be a messy hot nest of spiders that I don't use?

how do you use your greenhouse and is it worth it?

I love mine. In the spring I nurture all my veg seedlings and then in the summer I grow tomatoes, cucumbers and aubergines. This year I'm going to attempt to grow on plug plant flowers (by post) too.

It does have a few spiders....

It's my happy place, get one!!!

Stefoscope · 26/03/2020 23:17

You could always get one of the temporary pvc ones for this year and see how you like it. Watering in the summer months can be a bit of a pain, but it's very satisfying to watch plants grow from seed.

Weepingwillows12 · 27/03/2020 07:59

I have gone for a temporaty PVC one as my conservatory and windowsills are full of plants from seeds that need to harden off outside so I can start some more. Would love a proper greenhouse but dont really have space so this option is good and I can move it or pack it away in summer if I dont grow veg in there.

Good for tomatoes because not only does it give them extra warmth, it gives some protection from blight.

Mine, as PP said, is a haven - but I'm lucky enough to have space for a comfy chair in there. One rule about greenhouses - not matter how big yours is, you need a bigger one. Bit like lego or meccano - no matter how much more you buy, your ambitions grow, and you never have enough quite to finish the current model.

Ooh, I've been wondering the same thing and fantasising about lovely tomatoes but also think the reality - and my lack of gardening knowledge - mean the reality will be a glass room for spiders and slugs. I think the PVC idea is a good one.

I have a conservatory which, when we bought the house I thought we'd want to demolish. But it faces east so is full of sun and warm on a sunny morning with a comfy sofa. Great for seedlings so is basically a greenhouse/living room hybrid. Love itZ

I love mine. Few spiders, peaceful and warm in this weather.

Conservatories are lovely at this time of year. We've been having lunch in ours for the last couple of weeks and now are even able to breakfast in it. Windowsills are filled with seed propagators and pots of daffodils. Lifts the spirits being "almost" outside.

And we've put a thermostatically controlled fan in it so if the temperature in there exceeds 20, the warm air is pumped through into the house.

@Weepingwillows12
Can you say which PVC temporary greenhouse you bought? Has it arrived and are you pleased with it? I've got loads of seeds sowed all round the house and just realising they've nowhere to go.

didireallysaythat · 28/03/2020 14:59

I'm liking the idea of a greenhouse large enough for a sofa.....

Weepingwillows12 · 28/03/2020 17:20

It was die yesterday but is delayed. Will let you know what it's like when it arrives!

TonytheDog · 29/03/2020 00:19

@TonytheDog the kids spend time online building magical things in Minecraft. And I'm dreaming about greenhouses - so glad I'm not the only one.

TonytheDog · 29/03/2020 13:09

didireallysaythat this is the greenhouse I dream of
