The facts -
We have a sloping garden which is mostly laid to grass.
Its a rented property but we are hoping to stay a while.
We are neither gardeners nor DIYers but I am prepared to try and do very much enjoy the outside space.

The lawn ends and there is a picket fence, this then drops onto a patio area and there are a set of 4 steps. To the right side is a small sloping patch, with a gradient of the steps. It is roughly triangular and although the top has the fence, the fence does not go right down to ground level.

I fear the little soil there is will be a bit stony and of poor quality.

What would you do with it?

I'd grow things that would cope with the conditions. Wallflowers, aubretia, yellow corydalis are all things that grow on wall in very similar conditions. Nasturtiums cope with poor soil, and flower better than they do in rich soil.
