Have millions of these tiny fine green leaves coming up. They come up doubled over then slowly unfurl. Some have a tiny black top. Popping up all over in a bed planted last spring. Thinking it must be a type of grass to be honest, but it’s very different to our lawn grass. If it’s obviously grass..sorry 😊

Looks like grass to me Grin

Springiscoming20 · 22/03/2020 13:41

Argh was hoping for something wonderful surprising us! It’s bloody everywhere!

If they're roundish rather than flat they could be onions, spring onions or chives?

AngusThermopyle · 22/03/2020 13:55

They could be grape hyacinth. I have some that come up looking a bit like that.

Springiscoming20 · 22/03/2020 14:23

Have decided to leave them in and see what happens. We have the time to dig it all out later in year if it’s grass after all :)

I think they look like a little bulb - grape hyacinth is possible as PP said. My grape hyacinth is already flowering but maybe you are further north.

Obviouslynotallthere · 22/03/2020 14:50

I think they are wild garlic. I have some in my garden which seems to have invaded over the last couple of years.

NeedMoreTea · 22/03/2020 14:53

If you rub one between your fingertips does it smell oniony?

Springiscoming20 · 22/03/2020 15:38

Off to check...

Yes, they look like an allium of some sort

peajotter · 22/03/2020 15:54

Definitely not grass. Some form of allium? They all look like that when they’re small. I would guess chives as they seed easily, but could be onions or ornamental ones. What was in the bed last year?

WombleOfThigh · 22/03/2020 15:55

Wild garlic has a much broader leaf-blade. All alliums will smell of onion or garlic to varying degrees, so have a sniff.

Springiscoming20 · 22/03/2020 15:59

Nope..no onion smell

TroysMammy · 22/03/2020 16:02

Spring onions

Obviouslynotallthere · 22/03/2020 16:44

Google is my friend. This is what mine look like when flowering. Apparently invasive. But quite pretty. Wild onions. Not sure if edible.

Omg you are geniuses!! We planted alliums last year but not in this spot! I didn’t realise they would spread!! Thank god didn’t dog them all out!!
