Kids garden

We have a big garden and I'd like to have an area for the kids to be able to grow some things in to encourage them to spend some more time outside. They are 6 and 8.

I don't really know where to start. I was thinking digging up a big square of grass, covering with compost and not sure where to go from there? Are flowers or vegetables easier to keep alive?

I'd appreciate any ideas or advice please.

Are flowers or vegetables easier to keep alive? There's easy and difficult things on both sides.

One thing my Mum did was to let me "buy" shrubs etc for the rest of the garden, so that here and there was "my rosebush" (varieties Goldilocks and Masquerade) "my cactus" etc. That meant I could play at gardening rather than have the whole burden of maintenance of one area.

Some thi gs are dead easy to grow. Marigolds and nasturtium from seed. Courgettes too.

One thing I would say is that kids love to water, so whatever you plant, make sure it's thirsty!
