How and when to renovate a lawn

The bottom lawn has old fruit trees in it, grass and weeds. Not great. The top lawn was crushed by us driving a dumper truck all over it last year, patchy and mossy in the shade.

I've tried weed and feed in the last 5 years we've lived here and it hasn't made much difference. I've scarified but only in the autumn (so much thatch!) as I was worried it would just look awful in the spring.

Any lawn renovation tips, oh wise ones?

The Lawn Expert book by DG Hessayon has a chapter on renovating an old/knackered lawn, you can probably get a second-hand copy v cheap on a well-known auction site. The process takes you all through the seasons and what to do when.

If all else fails, there is another chapter on creating a new lawn Grin

My gardener scarified this week. Said they try to do all the lawns in their care at this time of year - removes the moss and makes the grass much healthier and also easier to care for.

I bow to his experience and wisdom as I know nothing Wink

Thank you.

I'd forgotten about the lawn expert - must have a copy somewhere.

I've just used green thumbs online calculator - I've around 500m^2 so I'm not sure I can afford them!
