Can I plant bulbs today (London)?

Argh - didn't get a chance to plant my bulbs in November and suddenly it's New Year's Day. Will I get away with planting tulips in a container outside now? I'm in London with a small, sheltered S-facing but quite shady garden.

Last year I planted the last of mine on new year's eve. It just meant they flowered later, so I got flowers for longer (as I had planted some earlier). My garden sounds similar to yours.

No matter how late it is, they're better in the ground growing than sitting around in a bag.
