Hi,

Can anyone identify this plant?

I didn't realise someone had used it on a gift I was given and by 1yo DS has just got in the bag and I think he might have eaten a berry.

Not sure if I should be freaking out or not!

Thanks

It's holly

cobwebsoncornices · 24/12/2019 10:18

And, yes, it is poisonous.

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 24/12/2019 10:24

One berry shouldn't be a problem/ fatal but I would try and contact you GP asap or 111 for advice..
I personally would wait and see/ keep an eye on the child for vomiting or looking unwell before panicking.
Fingers crossed all is fine.

I was really hoping it wasn't holly!

He will have ingested max. 1 berry (if any) as only 2 are missing from the sprig and I found one squished on the floor.

Will make sure he has lots of water and keep a very close eye on him. On hold to 111 now.

So annoyed at myself.

if child vomits, let them
most likely the berry will pass through pretty much intact
only eating lots is really risky

Wingingitsince2018 · 24/12/2019 10:55

Thanks @listeningquietly that really helps. Google is a scary place sometimes!

I filled out a poison control survey and it said the same, watch out for symptoms and keep hydrated.

Waiting for a 111 call back, the questions they asked made it sound much scarier but he is his happy little self at the moment.

There's no medical treatment as such/antidote. So it would just be observation and treat any symptoms. A tiny amount probably won't cause any issues.

"So annoyed at myself." Don't be. You'd really freak out if you thought about how many plants are poisonous, and you can't be looking everywhere every minute of the day. Yet there's not much that is really poisonous, as in "one berry will male you seriously ill".

Ohyesiam · 26/12/2019 11:21

Deadly nightshade is the only plant that grows in the U.K. that could do you much harm from one berry.

ListeningQuietly · 26/12/2019 12:16

or hemlock drop waterwort
or many fungi

the main thing is to find reliable sources

MereDintofPandiculation · 27/12/2019 17:12

And a lot of poisonous things are also extremely unpalatable.
