Gardening qualification- which one?

I'm toying with the idea of studying for a qualification. I'm not sure yet whether this is with a view to starting a new career or whether it's just a general one for personal interest.

So, looking for:

  • home study
  • general principles either of plant care, gardening or garden design
  • fairly low commitment in terms of time, cost etc

I know this makes me sound pathetic, but I just want to take baby steps and explore before I commit to anything more drastic.

Can anyone recommend one they have done?

A friend of mine really enjoyed the Royal Horticultural Society Certificate. Hers was pretty generalised, but it looks as if you can now do different versions tailored around your specific needs.

Thanks - was wondering about trying the RHS ones. It's good to know they're enjoyable, especially as at this stage I'd just be doing it "for fun", rather than a serious career change.
