First frost

We had our first light frost last night so this morning I bundled the Strelitzia indoors - it's about to flower so I'm hoping that it's not been affected.

I guess it's time to put the garden to bed.

Normally I entirely neglect the garden over winter but what jobs should I be doing?

Order seeds for next year, give the greenhouse a good clean, remove excess silt from pond before the amphibians start hibernating. Towards the end of winter, prune roses, winter prune fruit trees, any major cutting back you need to do. Purchase and plant any bare rooted trees.

Have a critical look at the garden and see what you need to do to make it look interesting in the winter - flowers, berries, coloured bark, evergreens, "hard" features (flower bed edgings, permanent decorative supports etc).
