too late to be planting containers?

my front yard is a state. is it too late in the season to be planting up containers? most likely perennials rather than annuals (although last yrs geraniums were still flowering in november - in fact never got round to taking them out and they flowered again this year).

if not anyone got any suggestions what would do well in (fairly large) window boxes and containers, nw facing, next to house so shaded and dry. is currently (mostly dead...) geraniums/fern/japanese anemone/rosemary.

rosemary can usually be relied on to grow like a weed round here but this year most of mine have died

In a few weeks the pansies will be out and they will give you colour all winter.

may be too wet for rosemary this year? likes it dry doesn't it?

Pansies good, or you could just shove a few full-grown flowers like geraniums in for a few more weeks of colour.
