Is there a climbing white rose or white clematis that will thrive on a completely North facing side of the garden please? Thanks!

Climbing hydrangea will!

LifeOfBox · 21/09/2019 07:17

How much sun does it get - one end of my north facing garden is very sunny.

MrsBertBibby · 21/09/2019 07:17

Hah, I came here to say climbing hydrangea.

Star jasmine seems tolerant of shade and has a lovely scent too.

Shropshire Lass is a white rose that does well in shade. I would check
The David Austin site, which has recommendations for shade

If it's the north facing house wall these suggestions will work. If it's simply a fence, all the climber will do is climb to the top of the fence then flower on the south side. I used to have a wonderful display from my neighbour's climbing roses and clematis!

I’ve researched this a lot, as I want the same thing. I believe I have the definitive answer for the white rose: Mme Alfred Carrière. You’re welcome Wink

Didiusfalco · 21/09/2019 14:03

...it is taller than you would want for a fence though - mine is going on the front of the house...maybe I don’t have the definitive answer Confused

HollyBollyBooBoo · 21/09/2019 16:42

Thanks all! @Didiusfalco that is a beautiful rose! Apparently good for training over an arch as well so I think that could be the one - thank you!

I wish i d known this before planting mine up a north facing fence! All it's done is climb up to the top of the fence and we've had no flowers. We may have to move it

David Austin recommended ‘Claire Austin’ - much smaller than Mme Alfred Carriere which is a bit massive for the front of our little terrace.

Mme Alfred Carriere which is a bit massive for the front of our little terrace. Oh yes, I've learnt that the hard way! Never underestimate the ability of a rose to grow at least twice as high and far as you expect. My garden is full of roses flowering 4 trees away from the one they were planted under.

MairzyDoats · 22/09/2019 09:11

Mme Alfred Carriere is my absolute favourite rose! Clare Austen also lovely (I grew it in my old house on a fence.

Clematis Montana is pretty rugged. I've grown that in all sorts of conditions.
