Container gardening and planting bulbs

So I have lots of pots which are still flowering. They are unlikely to die back before I need to plant my spring bulbs, and it seems terrible to dig them up while they're still alive.

What do people do in this situation?

Start the bulbs in smaller pots, then later either transplant them into the larger pots, or sink the smaller pots into the soil of the larger ones. This is a purely theoretical idea - I've never tried it. I just have lots of pots, and a corner of the garden where I can stow pots which aren't currently interesting.
