What can I plant for some autumn / winter baskets?? Got 2 that look very sad at the moment!

The garden centres will soon be stocking the mini firs for winter planters, they are often in a lovely fresh green/ yellow. They do fine in a hanging basket. I then put a couple of small variegated ivy plants and some violas.
I find that violas flower longer than pansies, plus they send seeds out and next year little violas appear in unusual places.

Are you supposed to deadhead violas to encourage further flowering Beebumble? I never buy them for that reason!

Morrisons usually do a great selection of winter basket plants. My favourite are cyclamens.

I notice Aldi are doing an autumn/winter basket/container 6pk selection for £2.99. It's in stores this Thursday or Sunday I can't recall. I spotted it on the website's special buys section. Morrisons do a similar 4-pk but it's hit and miss when it arrives in stores.

I occasionally give the viola seed heads a snip with the scissors. They still keep on flowering.

Oh cool I'll head to the shops and use their selections as a guide - great tips!

Thanks Bee!

The Aldi selection arrives on Thursday. Same as last year it includes ivy, violas or pansies, heuchera, dianthus and those daisy things I forget the name of Smile

Brilliant, thank you @Gareth (tag isn't working)
I will go to Aldi on Thursday.

I think they're bellis (spelling)? I planted some last autumn/winter and they were still in bloom and pretty as late as June!

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 27/08/2019 20:47

That's it, bellis! Yes ours flowered until the late spring and the ajuga (possibly from a Morrisons pack) and dianthus are still going now!

I really rate the six packs of pansy/viola Morrisons sell - they're normally 2 for £3. I've tried the packs with 10 or 20 mini plugs and they never seem to get going/thicken up before the frost stops them flowering.

Thanks for the Aldi recommendation @GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat I went this morning and bought 6 packs to restock my containers!

You're welcome, it was good timing!Flowers
