Has my hanging basket had it?

Please bear with me. I know nothing about plants and gardening and need some advice. In May I bought this hanging basket and lovingly tended to it over the months watering, feeding and dead heading along the way.
After a really windy few days it started to look a bit battered and look a bit wilted. So I took it down and went through it and pulled out loads of dead leaves and plants. I untangled all the petunias that had grown upwards on top. This resulted in them all falling down as they are really leggy. I could have cried at the end result.
It looked like it had been sat on, there was no height on top at all through me untangling the stems. I've tried to pile them back on top again and it looks a right mess. I watched a you tube video and it seems that I've been deadhead ing it all wrong too as I've not been cutting off the green seed flower thing as well as the spent flower.
MIL reckons it's beyond help and I should get new plants and start again but I thought id get a second opinion.
What do you think?

Bear with it. They grow so quickly I think it will recover. Are you using miracle gro etc? If not, do, it'll speed up growth

Yes have been and still am using miracle grow regularly. I've just pruned a load off and tried to arrange it so it looked a bit better. I can't believe how awful it looks now compared to how it looked a week ago. All my neighbours had hanging basket envy!
