Veg in one bed - crop swaps

I have just bought the 'Veg in one bed' book which helpfully gives some crop swaps but only the for crops I actually want to grow! I am not a big fan of broad beans, beetroot or spinach. Is it possible to grow other crops in the same way and at the same time as these crops would be grown?

What do you mean be "crop swaps"? Is this talking about crop succession, growing different crops in successive years in the same spot of ground, eg growing beans to increase the nutrient, next year cabbages which are greedy feeders, the year after something else so any cabbage diseases in the soil die off? Or is it something else?
