I am looking for some low maintenance small trees/shrubs to put in pots - perhaps half a dozen or so. Olive/bay that kind of thing. I have a knack for killing things off so I need something that will fend for itself really. It's neither particularly shaded/nor does it get particularly hot (gets the morning sun). Anyone?

Fatsia Japonica, grows well in a large planter and makes a statement plant.
Don’t be tempted by a Camellia, they hate morning sun.

Cordylines, Phormiums and Yuccas are also good architectural plants that would work in containers on decking without requiring too much of a fuss being made of them.
