Transforming small leaky pond into wildlife oasis?

So I have a small pond in the garden which was made with a pre-formed liner which has sprung a few leaks and is now completely beyond salvage.

I want to create a bigger pond on the are next to it and wondered about filling this one in and making something useful for wildlife as a sort of wetland area as drainage will poor unless I remove the liner which looks like a massive job.

Anyone tried this and can give some tips?

Excellent idea. We had to turn our tiny pond into a bog garden, we basically punctured the pond liner, added some gravel then soil.
