Help! Are these weeds?

We've just had a new lawn out in a couple of weeks ago. There is a patch that looks different from the rest (see photo). Are those weeds in the grass that I should pull out? Or just a different type of grass? I am a total novice.

Thanks in advance!

Definitely weeds, but regular mowing will probably get rid of them.

They look like sycamore seedlings. Whether you want to keep them or not is entirely up to you. No-one else can decide what you think is a weed.

Thank you both - this is really helpful :)

Looks like sycamore seedlings to me too. Unless you want a giant forest in your garden they need to go! They pull up pretty easily or you can mow them off when you cut the grass.

I wouldn't have thought it was quite the time of year for sycamore seedlings yet, but whatever they are they don't belong in a lawn!

You could be right that they're not sycamore, but not many plants have those long cotyledons. What we can definitely say is a) they're not grass (if nothing else, all grasses have a single cotyledon) b) they're from a seed which packs a bit of a punch - the seedlings are big, and they've fought their way through a dense sward of grass. c) they won't survive mowing. The mower will take them off below the cotyledons, and they won't regrow from that.

We've finally mowed the lawn today so hopefully they won't come back. Thanks everyone!
