What is this weed taking over my garden?!

This weed is literally taking over, it spreads on a vine like stem, re-roots and then the vine goes along again. They flower a yellow colour.

I've ignored the garden this year and it's out of control!

Leaves look like buttercup - that creeps along and has yellow flowers. Cheerful but does take over Grin

CrazyOldBagLady · 04/07/2019 14:00

Yes looks like buttercups to me too

userxx · 04/07/2019 14:05

I've got loads of this too. Finally I know what it is!

If you pile a load of mulch over it after having a go a digging it out it’ll help suppress it. Grow perennial geraniums or groundcover to keep it at bay. It does go or at leas diminish.

Thanks guys, the flowers are ok but it's suffocating the real plants and has crept onto the lawn! The roots are so thick and deep I think I've lost the battle this year. Just going to rip up what I can every week and then hack it to death in Autumn 😁

Those perennial geraniums look perfect bear, it's a shady part of the garden

Creeping buttercup, the best way is to wait until the ground is really wet and dig it up with a fork and pull up all the roots that you can.
A pain of a job, but worth it to get rid.

sackrifice · 04/07/2019 14:56

I dig those out with my hori hori knife whenever I see them. You have to keep on top of them at all times.

Pjam2 · 04/07/2019 17:12

Please don't use mulch. I had mulch Dow. It attracts earwigs. My home has been invaded by earwigs. Genuin.

Pjam2 · 04/07/2019 17:16

I find. Dig up as much as u can once as low as u can go. Dig a trench around and in middle. Put as much salt in cover with soil and it will kill roots. I also spray with apple cider vinegar and bicarbonate soda. Keep doing it and it will go.

sackrifice

please tell us more about a hori hori knife! It sounds awesome.

I think it’s called creeping Charlie. It’s one of the few weeds I kind of “enjoy” getting rid of - something satisfying about tracing the vine and all it’s roots to clear it. I’m weird!!

MereDintofPandiculation · 05/07/2019 11:27

Yes, creeping buttercup, Ranunculus repens.
