Came across these strange white eggs/growths on an allium, any idea what they are? Seem too big for an insect egg, size of a large pea. They look hard but I daren't touch in case there's something icky inside!

What's this on my allium!

I don't know but alliums are part of the onion family and those look like little onions. Pickled, possibly? I'm sure you'll get an answer from someone who knows.

They do look like onions, I googled to see if I could find any allium heads with onions on but no luck. I'm not a knowledgeable gardener myself so have no idea if it's normal.

It's totally normal, just part of the plant as the flower turns to seed.

They’re Bulbils, little miniature bulbs. Totally normal. Not sure if you can plant them and successfully get new plants from them after flowering has finished ?

Thank you all! Very pleased they're not some hideous insect egg. My first thought was bulb type growth, but then I couldn't find any pictures to back that up. I will try planting them once they have grown a bit to see what happens.

I’m glad to see someone else has got them! I braved mine eventually and tried to break a large one open and, yes, they are totally solid and looked like a bulb inside. At least it solved the problem of whether it was a nasty bug baby cooking! But yes, I’m now going to save them & plant them and we’ll see what comes up. I have different coloured alliums but these blobs only seem to be affecting the dark purple ones. Yours look very similar to mine.

How can I put a photo on here please?

You can grow them on:
