Garden design advice

I've contacted a local garden designer for ideas on how to tie the newer part of the garden (near the house which we've remodelled) to the older part (selection of old trees etc from previous owners). I don't want to rip it all out, but make the new bit (blank canvas after the build) fit with the old. There's a 8m wide, 4m tall, 3m deep beech hedge that splits in the garden in two (except it doesn't quite as it isn't as wide as the garden).

If you've used a garden designer to give you ideas, but not to give you a planting plan nor do any hard landscaping, how did you manage not to get a full package? I have ideas, I think I'm just seeking approval before wasting money on something that won't look good.
