Our mowers that mulch any good?

I’ve got quite a lot of lawn area (quarter of an acre) and I’m looking for a new mower as mine has broken. Separate lawn areas are not suitable for a ride on so it does take quite a while, plus steep bits means I don’t want a roller. Hubby thinks we should get a mulching mower but I’m worried it wouldn’t work well on our quite course grass. Don’t want grass clippings all over my shoes either and would I have to mow more than once a week to keep on top of it. Thanks for any advice

We use a ride on, so I can't comment on the manual ones, but we mulch, I'd say two times out of three, depends on if we need the cuttings for the compost or not.

Things I've noticed.

It's much quicker to mulch as you don't need to be emptying the carrier out.
It's better for the grass it basically feeds it.
You do get grass cuttings for the first day or so after a cut, so need to watch your shoes
You can't do it on wet grass, which you shouldn't be cutting anyway to be fair.
We don't need to cut it more often because we mulch. We cut it to the same height whichever way we are doing it.

How about an auto mower? We have a largish garden and our Husqvarna is great. It's mowing right now and as it only takes a little bit off at a time it mulches the clippings. They do larger models that maybe better for a large garden and I think they can handle 70% inclines.

Mulching mowers can, over a period of years build up a layer of organic matter in the base of the sward which will ultimately create thatch. Tend not to cope with long grass very well. There are some (possibly made by Hayter) that give the option of collection or mulching.

Another vote for a robot mower. Our lawn has been in beautiful condition since we got it and of course it saves loads of time. Ours is a flymo model I think
