Planting next to picket fence

Hi all, I want to plant evergreens in the east facing border in my small front garden. I have a picket fence and want to avoid the plants growing through the fence as the pavement is quite narrow and it would obstruct pedestrians. Would using garden mesh as in the pic work, nailed to the inside of the fence? Appreciate plants may eventually grow over the height of the fence but easier to cut back then through the fence. Thanks!

Why not just prune the extra growth off?

I can’t stand it when my plants cross the outline of the border so I just prune them back whenever they do

You are correct fucks but I'm a lazy sod! It would look better without the mesh though so I'll have to shift my arse into gear Smile
