Any ideas what this is? Growing huge while simultaneously being eaten by bugs...

Hollyhock?

Beebumble2 · 27/05/2019 20:43

It’s a Lavatera, tree mallow. I’ve a self seeded one in my front garden that has purple flowers on it.
It’s grown huge and will be getting the chop! But not until it’s finished flowering as the bees love it.
Strangely it’s growing next to a hollyhock, which has remained tiny.

Ah on second thoughts looking at the buds it could be a hollyhock, closely related plants.

I vote hollyhock.

Some sort of mallow. I have lovely purple ones that are not as tall as hollyhocks but great for bees, and the birds love the dried cheeses(seeds) that are edible in common mallow.
