I am gradually trying to cover my borders/beds with plants but whilst they grow should I be covering bare patches with compost/manure or bark mulch i am a bit confused

if you put mulch on all the bare spaces between your plants, that will reduce the number of weeds you get and help keep the roots of your plants damp which they like.
