Good pot plants for shady wall?

We are just redoing the garden and have a new pathway running along the shady fence. Garden faces east and one side gets quite sunny but the other is very shaded. What will grow well in small-ish pots along the shady fence? I'd like something evergreen and low maintenance. Not too fussed about flowers, it's quite a contemporary city garden.

Thoughts?

Skimmia Rubella. We have several in pots along a shaded wall. They are evergreen. They develop red buds in late autumn/early winter which adds a bit of colour to the garden at that time of year. They turn into tiny white/pale pink flowers in the spring. They are low maintenance - I have never trimmed mine, just remove the dead flower heads at the end of spring.

You should also find some good suggestions on this website.

Where are you?

I had aspidistras in pots in the UK, though they need to be brought in during winter. The flowers are very hard to see.

What about heuchera/heucherella, hellebores, evergreen ferns (e.g. Polystichum polyblepharum), epimedium? Box also; mine are ok but there is box blight going round

That plants for shade site is brilliant! When we moved into our new house with a north-facing garden, I spent hours online, choosing plants that don't need sun. I bought loads of bluebells and they're all still doing well, 5 years later.

Thanks all this is great. I was thinking also about a small Japanese Acer? Anyone had much luck with these in shade?

A small acer (Beni Maiko? there are many varieties) will be great in shade. They tend to get wind scorched so make sure it's in a sheltered position if you do get one.

I was just about to say Acer! Our fence is painted charcoal, and the acers look really amazing against it.
