I have bough 2 grapevine (hopeful) to grow up the wooden pergola, am planning to leave the rear fence bare as we’ve made a ‘secret garden’ behind with lots of colourful plants that look fab when you glimpse them through fence Smile

I would really like something easy on the eye to plant against the fence on the right... ideally something that will grow up/in front of fence panel & provide a bit of cover for the small birds & maybe even some berries. Something that isn’t too deep or at least can be kept trimmed back. Garden is sunny most of day.

Very grateful for any suggestions or advice Smile

Ceanothus. No fruit, but fabulous colour, dense evergreen bushiness, and a magnet for bees and butterflies.

Is the pergola your dining area ? If so I would think about keeping a fairly clear passage between that and the BBQ, maybe a climber that didn’t mean you had to go round a large shrub.

We’ve got a table & chairs house side of the BBQ on a patio but yes, I suppose anything too deep from fence might be a pain.

Have googled ceanothus & they are very pretty Smile
