Dogwood or another s shrub ?

I've created a space in our large mainly herbaceous border by ripping out a viburnum that was established when we moved in ,but every year got smelly with the beetle infestation.I can see this space from my kitchen window,and it's right next to our large patio.I planted a fatsia that was reduced last autumn but it's succumbed to frost,and I've decided that's not right.
I'm considering a dogwood for the lovely winter colour as it's so visible from the house,but are they boring in the summer months ?
The other possibility is a phyladelphus -mock orange.Seems a bit old fashioned ,as it makes me think of my childhood home,but the scent near the patio would be lovely.But then nothing to see in winter.
Any experience of either shrub anyone ?Thanks.

Some dogwoods have beautiful flowers in the summer months.

I cut my dogwood down a week or so ago, and in its space I'll stick some annual flowers for the summer.

Then the nice colourful stems will be back for winter.

I hate the drab winter, so I really appreciate the colour that it brings.

I have dogwood and I like it all year round. Mine gets very big (circumference) but that depends on how much you have, and tall. If I prune in February, which I was told when it should be done, it grows so quick it still gets tall. I don't prune every year. Mine is mainly red, mixed with a little green and looks really nice in winter.

Dogwood it is .Several months of winter colour as opposed to a couple of months of flowers. I will check out the different types.I also want something that grows fairly quickly to fill the gap.Thanks for the replies.

I would Go for Cornus Midwinter fire. If you plant Ophiopogon, the black gras in front of it it will look stunning. Alternatives are Pheasant grass Amenanthele as this is striking all year and does not need cutting back. Or Acer Sango Kaku which is beautiful and has scarlet stems all winter. This does not need pruning either.

Cornus Siberica is beautiful, lovely bright red stems.

Winter and spring, I love viburnum carlesii.
