I've created a space in our large mainly herbaceous border by ripping out a viburnum that was established when we moved in ,but every year got smelly with the beetle infestation.I can see this space from my kitchen window, and it's right next to our large patio.I planted a fatsia that was reduced last autumn but it's succumbed to frost, and I've decided that's not right.
I'm considering a dogwood for the lovely winter colour as it's so visible from the house, but are they boring in the summer months ?
The other possibility is a phyladelphus -mock orange.Seems a bit old fashioned ,as it makes me think of my childhood home, but the scent near the patio would be lovely. But then nothing to see in winter.
Any experience of either shrub anyone ?Thanks.
